Post-Thanksgiving update

Hope everybody's Thanksgiving break was relaxing. Since it's the end of the term and a lot of us are overwhelmed with finals, we're putting off the coordinator selection until next term. See below for more information on what to do if interested in the coordinator position.

We need to decide what nights to have general meetings next term. Please email me and let me know which of these times works for you:
Monday after 6:15 pm
Tuesday after 7 pm
Wednesday after 6:15 pm
Thursday after 4:15 pm

Upcoming events:

Next meeting:
This Wednesday, Dec 3, 2008 @ 5:45 - 7:15
Smith rm 328
Bring your own food or to share!
Relaxed meeting... discuss the campaigns a little bit but the meeting will be short so we can keep studying for finals.

Other announcements:

Open coordinator position
The position is paid, and the expectations are listed on our website blog.

WE ARE DELAYING THE SELECTION UNTIL THE 2ND WEEK OF NEXT TERM (when our first winter term general meeting is), so the nomination process is open until then. At that time, we'll decide!

At the last meeting, members mentioned some things they would like to know about potential coordinators, so if you are interested in the coordinator position, send me an email with the following:
-what inspires and motivates you
-previous organizing experience (don't worry if you don't have any)
-how much time you can commit to the club, how busy your schedule is Winter term and Spring term
-social skills that you feel will help you in this job
-what area of Portland do you live in? And what is your mode of transportation?

Those who are interested can attend the first coordinator meeting at the beginning of Winter term to get a glimpse of what the planning entails. More information when we know the date, time, & location.

National Global Warming Teach In
Thursday, February 5, 2009

Anybody interested in being involved?

Here is an easy way to impact events in Washington, DC, and overcome business-as-usual politics. Just reply to this e-mail, and I'll let the national organizers know that we would like to invite our Congress member to engage with us in a round-table dialogue next February 5th as part of the National Teach-In.

A national group did this last year apparently. They set up a bank of computers in the capitol that will allow political leaders to sit down at a laptop and have a dialogue with a campus audience back in their district. They invite them to participate on our behalf. If they say no, then, no further work on our part. But the invite still gets climate on their radar.

The Green Scare: What it is and how to fight back
Winter term, TBA

Corporations and politicians consider modern environmental and animal liberation activists America's # 1 terrorist threat. Their hype, termed the "Green Scare" by many, is focused in suppressing all nonviolent direct action and chilling radical activism. This workshop will describe methods in recognizing tactics of the "Green Scare," and will demonstrate combative tactics of security culture while fighting back with knowledge and solidarity. Presented by Steph and Tim from Animal Defense League (Activists involved with Portland Animal Defense League, Cascadia Earth First!, and Cascadia Rising Tide)

Should the Environmental Club consider co-sponsoring this?
